Chapter 15
Doc really didn't have any interest in returning to his suite, but he wanted a shower and a change of clothes and he wasn't quite certain what his plan was, so he went there anyway.
He pushed open the door and stepped inside, sorrow filling him. It felt so empty. It was almost as if the rooms knew the Bakers were gone. The smell was even different. It smelled... neutral. He hated it.
"It's about time you returned," Thaddeus grumped.
"I'm not in theâ"
"I'd just like some whiskey if it's no trouble," Thaddeus interrupted.
"Sure thing, old boy," Doc said softly.
He grabbed two bottles of whiskey from the kitchen and poured half a bottle into Thaddeus's pot.
"Much better," Thaddeus mumbled drunkenly.
Oblivion. At least Thaddeus could still find it at the bottom of a whiskey bottle.
Doc finished off the bottle and went to shower. He didn't want to stay here longer than he had to.
While he showered, he forced himself to focus on the Akashii. There had to be a way to free them without ending up like Solomon's men. And if he did manage to free them, what then? He didn't know if Akashii could
lose their minds, but there was a chance they'd been imprisoned too long to save. Just like Anis Jury.
The more he thought about it, the more he realized he wouldn't be able to do this one on his own. He was going to need some help.
As he stepped from the shower he made a very short list in his head of who he'd need. Then he added Jury because Jury needed the distraction just as much as he did.
A soft knock sounded on his door, and Doc wrapped the towel around his waist and padded across the suite to answer it. Emily was standing on the other side.
"I just came to check on you," she said, eyes dropping from his face to his still wet chest.
That was a lie. She'd come to offer him comfort. He could see it in her eyes and the way she was nibbling her bottom lip.
"I can't," he whispered as unchecked desire coursed through him. He wanted to reach for her, draw her into his arms, and give her everything she wanted. But he couldn't.
"Why not?" she asked, eyes returning to his.
"Because you're a keeper," he said, voice tight. "And I can't keep you."
Her brow furrowed, and she said, "It doesn't have to be that way."
"It does for me," he replied, reaching out his hand and brushing it gently along her cheek. "If I had you for even a minute, I wouldn't want to let you go."
He took one step back and said, "I'm sorry." Then he closed the door between them.
"I goddamn hate this week," he muttered as he tried to push the image of her lush lips from his mind.
The tide was just messing with him now. It had caught him in the undertow and was tossing him back and forth like a rag doll.
Forty minutes later, Doc was knocking on Jury's door, but no one answered.
